✦ Synopsis
A series of (\mathrm{Bi}{3}^{+}{ }^{3} R E{5} \mathrm{O}{12})-type phases ( (R E=\mathrm{Y}, \mathrm{La}, \mathrm{Pr}, \mathrm{Nd}, \mathrm{Sm}), (\mathrm{Eu}, \mathrm{Gd}, \mathrm{Tb}, \mathrm{Dy}, \mathrm{Ho}, \mathrm{Er}, \mathrm{Yb}, \mathrm{Lu})) has been prepared in air at (950^{\circ} \mathrm{C}) and characterized by (\mathrm{X})-ray powder diffraction and density and valence measurements performed on single-phase samples. With the exception of the (\mathrm{Er}, \mathrm{Yb}), and Lu varieties, the characteristic feature of the series is rhombohedral symmetry. The lattice parameters of the individual phases depend on the (R E) element and are within the intervals (a=3.755-3.959 \AA) and (c=9.482-9.964 \AA) (hexagonal setting). Traces of very weak superstructure peaks indicate a possible unit cell multiplication. The series is stable in air and exhibits a comparatively wide compositional interval centered around the (\mathrm{Bi}{3} R E_{5} \mathrm{O}_{12}) stoichiometry. (1995 Academic Press, Inc.

A wide variety of isostructural phases of the NZP family, \(A M^{\prime 3}{ }^{\prime \prime}{ }^{\prime 4} \mathrm{P}_{3} \mathrm{O}_{12}\), have been synthesized. Some of these phases are reported for the first time. Characterizations by IR, EPR, and UV-visible spectroscopic methods are presented.
A new phase, Bi 13 Mo 4 VO 34 E 13 (E: Bi(III) lone pair) was found in the Bi 2 O 3 -MoO 3 -V 2 O 5 system and its formula determined via single crystal analysis and confirmed by solid state synthesis. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2/c, with cell parameters a ؍ 11.652(7) A
