✦ Synopsis
A new phase, Bi 13 Mo 4 VO 34 E 13 (E: Bi(III) lone pair) was found in the Bi 2 O 3 -MoO 3 -V 2 O 5 system and its formula determined via single crystal analysis and confirmed by solid state synthesis. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2/c, with cell parameters a ؍ 11.652(7) A s s , b ؍ 5.7923(8) A s s , c ؍ 24.420(9) A s s , ؍ 101.38(6)°, and Z"2. The crystal structure is built up by infinite [Bi 12 O 14 E 12 ] n columns surrounded by 10 (Mo, V)O 4 tetrahedra, situated on layers parallel to (100) and ( 001), with an extra Bi atom located at the intersection of these ''(Mo, V)O 4 layers'' in between two tetrahedra. The Bi 13 Mo 4 VO 34 E 13 structure is in general agreement with that of R. N.
