Syntheses of the title glycosides are described. The critical O-glycosylations were carried out in the presence of boron trifluoride etherate with a high degree of alpha-selectivity.

## Abstract Methyl 2‐__O__‐benzyl‐6‐deoxy‐3‐__C__‐methyl‐α‐D‐mannopyranoside (2) was synthesized in ten steps by starting from the readily available methyl 2,3‐anhydro‐4,6‐__O__‐benzylidene‐α‐D‐allo‐pyranoside (3). The key step was the stereoselective __cis__‐hydroxylation (cat. osmium(VIII) oxide)
The title trisaccharide glycosides were needed for studies of the interactions of &tins, receptor sites for bacteriophages with Salmonella lipopolysaccharide corespecificity, and correlation of n.m.r. chemical shifts and structure. The methods used in the syntheses were conventional. Thus, 2,3,4,6-
1H and 13C NMR data for a series of 3-O-, 4-O-and 3,4-di-O-glycosylated methyl a-L-rhamnopyranosides are presented. The glycosylation e †ects on the spectra of disaccharides and the deviation from additivity values in the spectra of trisaccharides were determined.
The title branched-trisaccharide derivatives (9 and 13) have been synthesised from methyl 2,3-O-(2-nitrobenzylidene)-a-L-rhamnopyranoside (2) using the 2nitrobenzylidene residue as a temporary blocking-group. Condensation of 2 with methyl (2,3,4-tri-O-acetyl-a-D-glucopyranosyl bromide)uronate afford
