โœฆ Synopsis

A new method for the preparation of SERS active Cu electrode surfaces with high enhancement factors, which enable the observation of high quality spectra in the low-frequency region at different chloride concentrations, is proposed. Low-frequency modes at 160 and 145 cm-t are attributed to Cu-Cu vibrations by isotopic ("CU/~~CU) frequency shift. Qualitative agreement with predictions of the dipole-dipole coupling model are observed for Cu-Cl mode frequency dependence on Cl-ion concentration. A linear frequency u(Cu-Cl) dependence on relative integrated SERS intensity for deactivated Cu electrodes has been found. Differences in concentration behaviour of the Cu-Cl mode for activated and deactivated Cu electrodes are discussed.

It is shown that the enhanced Raman spectra of pyridine adsorbed on Fe can be obtained by depositing thin films of Fe onto roughened Ag substrates. An alternative strategy of inducing enhanced scattering is also explored which relies on the deposition of a low density of small growth centres of Ag o
