โœฆ Synopsis

UPON oxidation of gossypol with alkaline permanganate, formic, acetic, and isobutyric acids were identified as reaction products. The quantity of each acid formed was determined. The quantity of isobutyric acid obtained was equal to 92.I per cent. of the quantity required by theory it if is assumed that I tool of gossypol yielded I tool of acid. Under the conditions of the experiment the presence of isobutyric acid as a decomposition product of gossypol indicates the probable presence in the gossypol molecule of a side chain consisting of at least the isobutyl group.

The adsorption of gossypol, a toxic pigment and the major colorant in cottonseed oil, has been studied, using silicas and aluminas of different surface areas and pore size distributions. Gossypol has a high affinity for alumina surface, the adsorption isotherm follows the Langmuir equation, and the

Solutions of gossypol in buffered methanol were studied by polarography, triangular-wave voltammetry, controlled-potential coulometry, and ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry. The two aldehydic functional groups on gossypol are irreversibly electrochemically reduced to the alcohols. A mechanism is
