✦ Synopsis

The conversion of a tol I11 Escherichia coli mutant, tolerant to colicins E2, E3, I a and K, into protoplast-like stable L-form makes i t sensitive to colicins E2, I a and K. I t s original sensitivity t o colicin El and tolerance to E3 are preserved in this celf form. Thus, rods of this mutant are not truly tolerant to colicins E2, I a and K, but "pseudotolerant": their wall receptors have been turned out to "nonlethal" ones by the mutation in question.

Colicin E3 has been shown t o be a n unique ribonuclease: it blocks the proteosynthesis in susceptible bacteria through the cleavage of a 3'-terininal fragment from the 16s ribosomal RNA in the 30s ribosomal subunits (SENIOR and HOLLAND 1971, BOWMAN et al. 1971 a).
