✦ Synopsis

The polysaccharide isolated from Escherichia coli 0126 lipopolysaccharide contains o-galactose, o-mannose, L-fucose, and 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-o-glucose in the molar ratios 1: 1: 1: 1. The structure of the O-antigen of the lipopolysaccharide from E. coli 0126 was established by compositional analysis, partial degradation, methylation analysis, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. These studies revealed that the O-antigen is branched and built up of tetrasaccharide repeating units having the following structure: + 2)~B-u-Manp-(I + 3l+o-Galp-(I + 31-B-D-GlcpNAc-(1 + 2 t 1 p-L-Fucp

The structure of Citrobacter O23-specific polysaccharide has been shown by sugar and methylation analyses of the native and chemically degraded polysaccharide and by 1H- and 13C-n.m.r. spectroscopy to consist of the tetrasaccharide repeating-units: ----4)-alpha-D-Man-(1----2)-alpha-D-Man-(1----2)-be
