✦ Synopsis

The structure of the capsular polysaccharide from Klebsiellu K50 has been determined by using the techniques of methylation, periodate oxidation, partial hydrolysis, and p-elimination.

N.m.r. spectroscopy (iH and 13C) was used to establish the nature of the anomeric linkages. The polysaccharide is comprised of repeating units of the heptasaccharide shown and is one of 19 capsular polysaccharides that are composed of D-glucuronic acid, D-galactose, D-glucose, and Dmannose residues, this is one. It has the only known, "five-plus-two", repeating unit; the structure of the polysaccharide from Klebsiella KS0 is, therefore, unique in this series. -t3)-~-D-Gal-(1~3)-~-D-Glc-(1~4)-(w-D-GlcA-(1~3)-cy-D-Man-(1~2)-6 a-D-Man-(l+ t 1 r~-D-Glc 6 t 1 P-D-Gal

The structure of the capsular polysaccharide from Klebsiella type K43 has been investigated using sugar and methylation analysis, uranic acid degradation, and NMR spectroscopy on the native and the O-deacetylated polysaccharide. It is concluded that the polysaccharide is composed of pentasaccharide
