✦ Synopsis

Although natural products of the isoflavonoid type are well known', and have been recognised at several different oxidation levels, the natural occur= rence of isoflavan-4-01s in plants has not been reported. This is to be anticipated in view of the acid sensitivity of this class of compound, as well as its relative ease of oxidation to isoflavanones.

The first asymmetric synthesis of the naturally occurring (+)-Kotanin is described. The key steps involve the intramolecular oxidative coupling of the cyanocuprate intermediate and the Fries rearrangement. The absolute configuration of (+)-Kotanin was assigned as aS by CD spectroscopic method. (~) 1
