โœฆ Synopsis

Abstract

A component of the egg string jelly of Loligo pealei inhibits ciliary activity in ciliated cells, thereby immobilizing a variety of swimming ciliated organisms. This report establishes the nidamental gland as a source of both the egg jelly sheath and the ciliary immobilizing factor. Methods are described for preparing crude and purified fractions of the immobilizing factor from the nidamental gland.

Four monoclonal antibodies to a purified ciliary neurotrophic factor have been produced by a combination of in vivo and in vitro immunization of mouse lymphocytes. Three of the antibodies-3D12, an 1gA subtype, and 5G9 and 2Bl1, both IgM subtypesbound to the single band on immunoblots of the purified

A vitellogenesis-inhibiting 0 factor has been characterized from extracts of lobster sinus glands (SG) using an in vivo bioassay developed in the shrimp, Palaemonetes varians. After a two-step purification by reversedphase high-performance liquid chromatography mP-HPLC), the bioactivity is recovered
