β¦ Synopsis
Ah&act-Platinum
foil, precipitated platinum black and electro-deposited platinum, platinum incorporating lead and 'Raney' platinum have the same specific activity for the electrocatalytic oxidation of acetic acid and acetate ion although the surface roughness changes by three orders of magnitude. Depletion of reactant and an associated increase in acidity in the micro-pores can lead to an apparent change of specific activity for acetate ion. Electrodeposited platinum electrodes of large surface roughness have been found to sinter during acetate oxidation at 94Β°C.

The steady-state electrochemical oxidation of acetate has been observed on smooth and platinized plathmm at potentials corresponding to an oxide-free surface. Carbon dioxide is the only reaction product. It is suggested that the first electron transfer is ratedetermining and takes place after a reve
