✦ Synopsis

Voltammogs of electrolytically mdeposited platinulrr-gold electrodes are characteristic of separation into two surfaces having the hydrogm and oxygen electrosorption properties of the pure individual metals. X-ray ditfractton studies are interpreted by assuming phase separation into a platinum phase with crystallite sire less than 50 A and an alloy phase of varying composition. Continuous potential cycling of an electrode results in an increase in the crystallite stre of the platinum phase and a decrease in its surface area. The specific electrocatalytic activity of the platinum phase for acetate oxidation is equal to that obtained previously for platinum electrodes of various roughness. The electrocatalytic oxidation of ethylene glycol has been investigated on platinum-palladium alloy electrodes of different compositions in alkaline aqueous solution. The surface characteristics of the alloys in contact with electrolytic solution have been studied using cyclic voltammetry. X-ray dif
