✦ Synopsis

To design equipment and facilities to process &&Iru'', an important food-#avouring condiment made from locust bean seeds, some of the physical properties of the seeds were determined. At a moisture content of 6)42% d.b., the average length, width and thickness of locust bean were 10)80, 8)42 and 4)64 mm, respectively. The average geometric mean diameter, sphericity and density were 7)47 mm, 0)69 and 1)15 g/cm, while the static coe$cient of friction varied from 0)36 on glass to 0)62 against plywood with the grain perpendicular to the direction of motion. The angle of repose was 133. 1999 Silsoe Research Institute Notation D . geometric mean diameter of seed ΒΈlength of seed S surface area of seed ΒΉ thickness of seed = width of seed sphericity of seed
