A highly sensitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay specific to (1โ†’3)-ฮฒ-Dglucans (GBP-ELISA) has been developed using a novel (1โ†’3)-ฮฒ-D-glucan-binding protein (T-GBP), which was purified from the amebocyte lysate of the Japanese horseshoe crab, Tachypleus tridentatus. A P-D-glucan isolated from a Japanese marine alga known as "Arame" (Eisenia bicyclis) was shown by methylation analysis to be composed of (l-3) and (l-+6) linkages and ( 1+3),(1+6) branch points. The 13C-n.m.r. spectrum confirmed these linkages and also verified the absence of /3-( l-+4) linkages. T
