## METHODS Fabrication of Thermocouple-Light Probe Standard 1 mm glass pipettes were drawn to an outer tip diameter of -50 pm and an interior diameter of -30 pm. An annular thermocouple junction was formed at the tip by vapor deposition of nickel and copper on the pipette. First, a 2,000 A nickel
