✦ Synopsis

The collisional line broadening of SO 2 transitions in the n 1 band was measured with SO 2 , air, and nitrogen as perturbers by applying a diode laser spectrometer in pulse mode. Eighteen lines from the P branch (5 £ JЉ £ 44, 0 £ KЉ a £ 20), eight lines from the Q branch (10 £ JЉ £ 40, 1 £ KЉ a £ 23), and five lines from the R branch (12 £ JЉ £ 35, 4 £ KЉ a £ 8) were investigated. The self-broadening coefficients g SO 2 -SO 2 show a significant decrease with increasing quantum number KЉ a as expected from the theory and vary from 0.41 to 0.16 cm 01 /atm. For small quantum numbers several coincidences with the theoretical predictions were found, whereas for larger quantum numbers stronger deviations occur. In the case of collisions with air (0.081 cm 01 /atm £ g SO 2 -air £ 0.111 cm 01 /atm) and nitrogen (0.095 cm 01 /atm £ g SO 2 -N 2 £ 0.124 cm 01 /atm), a weaker quantum number dependence of the broadening coefficients could be observed, in contrast to theoretical values.
