✦ Synopsis

Phytoplankton seasonality is still a major focus of limnological research. Knoxvledge of the causes of algal successions and the factors affecting them is a basic prerequisite for our onderstanding of ecosystems and thus for further progress in practical and theoretical hydrobiology. This book shows the advanced stage our knowledge has reached in this respect without concealing how UIIreliable that knowledge is in view-of the trcmendom complexity of the problems.

This book is unusual in attempting to take a global vicw of the topic by considering all climatic zones. The contributions are also arranged according to climatic zones, but the greater part of the book deals with natcrs of the temperate regions. Although it might be expected, the widc scope of the book does riot lead to tlie adoption of simplified standpoints or excessively broad generalizations, because each of the well known authors takes a different approach to the topic, concentrates
