✦ Synopsis

studies (1 1 j, provesses and ecosytems (15), and management (11, including managcinent of waters and catchment areas and problems of preserving aquat'ic fauna). 9 1 1 types of water found in Australia (freshwater and salt'water lakes, man-made lakes, flowing waters, artesian wells, creeks, etc. j are dealt with, although naturally to different extents. The different studies are concerned with chemical, optical and thermal conditions, sediment, micro-organisms, phytoplankton and macrophytes, zooplankton and fish.

Several contributions exceed the bounds of purely limnological studies, such as those dealing with the genetics of zooplankton (the advantages of sexual rather than parthogenetic reproduction in unstable ecosystems), bhe link between boundary layer and benthos in flowing waters, vertical migration and its variations (including rererse migrational behavionr in crustaceans), the consequences of introducing new fish species, and the zooplankton structure of lakes and ponds to mention but a few. This book, which also contains numerous informative diagrams and photographs, can therefore be recommended t o a wide range of readers.
