✦ Synopsis

The volume under consideration is based on the Symposium about High Pressure Biology held a t Toronto, July %loth, 1986. The 23 contributions of 40 authors from 9 countries concern with 1. Effects of high hydrostatic pressure as occurring in the deep ocean(8papers); 2.Theeffect of higher pressures on intact animals and the nervous system (6 papers), and 3. Effects of higher pressures a t the cellular and molecular level (9 papers). The selection of individual papers is rather heterogenous. The reader can find, in addition to contributions with review character, also such with highly specialized character. There are contributions dealing with intact animals but also papers dealing with the secondary and tertiary structure of biopolymers (HEREMANS), the water and aqueous solutions under high pressures (LUDEMANN), and pure methodological papers. Pl'evertheless this is an interesting, informative and topical volume about a subject which has not been frequently summarized to far. \Ve have to thank the editors for their engagement. The referee is sure that not only the specialist will read this book to his advantage.
