✦ Synopsis

Ab initio SCF/CI calculations on Rh2(02CH)4(H20)2+ indicate that the odd electron is accommodated in the quasi-degenerate x&,_~~ orbital, in agreement with a recent analysis of the ESR spectrum. The failure of previous theoretical treatments is attributed to the artificially delocalized description of the X* and S* positive holes over the two metal atoms.

Rh2 ( 02CCH,) .,( H,O): dissolved in 1 mol/dmg HC104 aqueous solution gives a broad axially symmetric ESR spectrum at 4.2 K with g,, = 3.76 and g, = 1.2. The analysis of this g-tensor has shown that the odd electron is accommodated in the degenerate x\*~,,~,~ orbital.

The same chemiluminescent spectrum of HNO was obtained in both the reaction systems of 0(3P) + CaHe + NO + 02 (\* A,)/02 and H + NO + 02( 'Ag)/Oa. The reaction mechanism for producing the excited HNO is proposed to be -HNO('A') + 02 ( 'Ag) + HNO(3A", + 0s (3X,) , HNOc3A") + 02 ('A,) --t HNO('A") +
