Resonance Raman spectra of butadtene obtained with radiatmn ~1 the 230-218 nm range exhibit activity in combmations and overtones oli a mode of b, symmetry. The pattern of the observed bands must be due to vlbronic activity of thts mode in a state of Ag symmetry-WC conclude that the 2 'AE state of butadiene bes between 5.4 and 5.8 eV. below the 1 '8, state at 5.8 to 6.3 eV
