✦ Synopsis

The transient Raman spectrum of the S, and T, states of carotenoids bound to the chromatophore membranes of Rhodobacter sphaeruides 2.4.1 (recorded by using 532 nm, GZ 100 ps, MLQS pulse trains as a difference spectrum of high power minus low power) has been compared with the S1 and T, Raman spectra of sphaeroidene and the T, Raman spectrum of sphaeroidenone. The vibronically coupled C-C stretching Raman line of bound sphaeroidene at 1766 cm-' identities the 2 '4 state as the S, state, and its frequency, which is lowered by 5 1 cm-' from that of free sphaeroidene, indicates weakened vibronic coupling for the bound carotenoid.

Fluorescence and fluorescence%xcitation spectroscopy at 170 K of the light-harvesting (LH2) complex ofRhodobacter sphaeroides 2.4.1 has determined the energies of level I (2 '4 ), level II, level III ( 'B: ) and level IV of the bound spheroidene, as the absorptive O-0 transitions, to be 14500, 18300
