The application of Raman spectroscopy to the examination of ancient art and the identification of mineral pigments used in antiquity has been demonstrated successfully hitherto. However, the examination of modern objects of art is hampered by the absence of a spectral library database of relatively

Abstract
The IR, resonance Raman (RR) and electronic spectra of two bisβazo pigments, Pigment Yellow 13 and Pigment Orange 34 were interpreted in terms of hydrogenβbonded hydrazo structures. Assignments of the vibrational and electronic spectra were facilitated by ab initio calculations at the B3βLYP/DZ level. A qualitative assessment of relative RR band intensities, in conjunction with band assignments, revealed the geometric changes which occur upon electronic excitation. These are in accordance with the nature of the electronic transitions predicted by timeβdependent B3βLYP/DZ calculations. Copyright Β© 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

## Abstract Small colonies (90β350 Β΅m in diameter) of the pigmented halophilic bacterium __Halobacterium salinarium__ have been studied by Raman microspectroscopy using excitation at 632.8 nm. The Raman spectra were dominated by bands due to carotenoid compounds. The intensity of the pigment bands
