✦ Synopsis

The resonance Raman scattering (RRS) of 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol in the neutral, basic and acidic solutions was reinvestigated. On the basis of the states of polarization of the Raman bands in neutral solution and possible tautomeric forms of the compound in basic, acidic and neutral media, the observed Raman bands were assigned to different normal modes of vibration pertaining to the molecule. Further, the surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) spectra of the molecule (in methanol-water mixture) adsorbed on silver hydrosol were recorded using excitation radiation identical with that for RRS. From an examination of intensity-enhancement patterns in the SERRS bands, a possible orientation of the adsorbate to the adsorbent was suggested. The enhancement factor in SERRS over RRS for each near-resonance wavenumber was calculated also and the excitation dependence examined and explained.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering from 2,2 -bipyridine adsorbed on nickel is detected without roughening procedure of the surfaces. The SERS-activation is assured by depositing silver colloidal layer onto the metal with adhering ligand. The SERS spectrum closely corresponds to the Raman spectrum of
