## Abstract We present a single‐pass L‐band erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) based on a large mode area (LMA) fiber. A single transverse mode is maintained through restricted mode launch. Pump light near 974 nm is sent into the core and has high spatial overlap with the signal beam, helping to p

✦ Synopsis
Abstract
A novel reflection L‐band erbium‐doped fiber amplifier, based on a fiber loop mirror, is constructed. This amplifier reflects the backward ASE to the EDF as a secondary pumping source. A gain of 30 dB (an increase of 6 dB) is obtained, compared to the forward‐end‐pumped EDFA in the range of 1570–1603 nm. The saturated output power was 7.63 dBm and 7.6 dBm for 1580 nm and 1600 nm signals, with increases of 2.98 dB and 3 dB, respectively, compared to the forward end‐pumped EDFA. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) for S-band signal amplification is designed by using a depressed cladding erbium-doped fiber (DC-EDF). The fiber's characteristics are described in terms of the effects of the fiber spooling diameter on the amplifier's performance. In this experiment, the spool

## Abstract A two‐stage short‐wavelength‐band erbium‐doped fiber amplifier (S‐band EDFA) is demonstrated using a depressed‐cladding erbium‐doped fiber (EDF). The EDF has a fundamental‐mode cutoff wavelength of about 1525 nm in order to suppress amplified spontaneous emission at the longer wavelengt
