Saccharin is extracted from the acidified liquid food with chloroform. This solvent is evaporated ; the residue is dissolved in ethyl acetate and applied on a silica gel GF,,, plate. After chromatographic separation, the saccharin band is scraped off and extracted with 1 % sodium carbonate solution.

✦ Synopsis
The reproducibility of direct scanning of thin-layer chromatograms has been investigated.
Provided the technique is rigidly standardized, relative standard deviations of I-5.3 % (on the same chromatogram) and 4-6 y0 (on different chromatograms) can be obtained in the case of reflectance spectroscopy, while fluorescence quenching measurements show relative standard deviation of 4-6 y. (on the same chromatogram) and 8.6-12 % (on different chromatograms). On different two-dimensional chromatograms relative standard deviations 6-12.5 y. (reflectance spectroscopy) and 13.5-15.2 y. (fluorescence quenching) have been observed. The reproducibility of fluorescence measurements has been found with two different instruments to be 1.9-3.6 y. and 2-5 %, respectively, on the same chromatogram, and 7.5 Ok and 9.1 O/J, respectively, on different chromatograms.
