## Abstract __Saccharomyces cerevisiae__ cells were immobilized in calcium alginate beads for use in the continuous production of ethanol. Yeasts were grown in medium supplemented with ethanol to selectively screen for a culture which showed the greatest tolerance to ethanol inhibition. Yeast beads

The control of the production of lactate

Factors controlling the production of ethanol and lactate have been examined using cell free extracts prepared from pea seeds (Pisum sativum var Alaska) and parsnip roots (Pastinaca sativa). The result suggest that under aerobic conditions pyruvate decarboxylase is inactive. With the onset of anaero

Production of ethanol from glucose and xylose by different Fusarium strains has been studied in shake flask cultures. The best strain was Fusarium oxysporum VTT-D-80134. The best ethanol yields were 50 % ethanol on both sugars. The fermentation time was 3 days on glucose and 6 days on xylose.
