✦ Synopsis

Lake Manasb:d is the only valley lake in the region with a true thermal stratification during summer. Seasonal and annual rates of carbon fixation in the water column by plankton populations were related to physical and chemical parameters on specific days. The temporal and spiltid changes showed the strong influence of nutrients on the primary production. KO significnnt dependence of carbon upt.ake on either phytopla, nkton density or biomass was determined. The overall production pattern during the study period was definitely bimodal, with one minor peak in spring (719.3 mgC m-2 day-l) and a msjor one in summer (1496.2 mgC m-2 da.y-i in June).

The study also revealed that nannoplankton was responsible for 69 oio of the primary production.

The energy transfer a t different trophic levels in a temperate lake ecasysteni locally called Sar (lake) has been investigated. Total phytoplankton production in terms of energy fixation has been estimated at 3.2 x 106 cal m-2 y-', out of which the fish harvest amounts t o 2640 cal m-2y-l. The conv

## Abstract The paper describes the seasonal variation in the rate of phytoplankton primary production in Suraha Lake – a large shallow water body – in relation to certain physico‐chemical parameters and the abundance and composition of the phytoplankton over a period of two years.
