Lake Manasb:d is the only valley lake in the region with a true thermal stratification during summer. Seasonal and annual rates of carbon fixation in the water column by plankton populations were related to physical and chemical parameters on specific days. The temporal and spiltid changes showed th

โฆ Synopsis
The energy transfer a t different trophic levels in a temperate lake ecasysteni locally called Sar (lake) has been investigated. Total phytoplankton production in terms of energy fixation has been estimated at 3.2 x 106 cal m-2 y-', out of which the fish harvest amounts t o 2640 cal m-2y-l. The conversion efficiency from phytoplankton t o fish has been est'imated a t 0.082 O , ' , , . Apart from other ecological parameters discussed in the paper, suggestions for the efficient use of other available energy from the system has been highlighted.

Monthly sampling of calcium and magnesium in the in-and outflons of Dal Lake revealed high concentrations of both during summer. The monthly inputs, outputs and retentions of these alkaline earths were estimated. The lake on an overall basis showed the retention of calcium but not of magnesium. This
The relationship between phosphorus concentration and estimated phosphorus load in Lake Dal-a marl lake-is described for the past decade. The concentration of this elcmcnt in t#he lake system remained constant during this period although the P load increased by about 40 yo. This phenomenon is discus
A comprehensive study of phyto-and zooplankton and macrozoobenthic components in Lake Xainital showed that species richness was high for plankton and low for macrozoobenthos. The algal biomass was dominated by greens (54 O/") and blue-greens (31 4"), the zooplankton population by copepods (84 O/o),
