โœฆ Synopsis

Abstract

The prevalence of antibodies to hepatitis A (antiโ€HA) was investigated in patients attending a clinic for hematological malignancies. Patients were divided into three age groups; the number with antibodies in each group was recorded. Of the 130 patients studied, 44% of those aged 4โ€“26, 70% of those aged 27โ€“50, and 83% of those aged 51โ€“76, were positive. This study identifies patients attending a clinic for hematological malignancies (ie, patients with immunologic deficiencies) as a group of people having a high prevalence of antiโ€HA. In the oldest group (51โ€“76), urban patients had a higher prevalence than rural patients โ€” a pattern similar to that observed in elderly Red Cross blood donors in a previous study. Seroconversion was noted in six patients, three of whom seroconverted from antiโ€HAโ€negative to antiโ€HAโ€positive within 12 months of the initial visit to the clinic.

In Japan, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most prevalent cancers, with a reported fatality rate showing a consistent and significant increase in the last decade. The existence of four GB C virus/hepatitis G virus (GBV-C/HGV) subtypes has been reported. The subtype was determined in 16 multitransfused GBV-C/HGV infected patients prior to bone marrow transplantation by comparing the 5ะˆ untranslated region (5ะˆ UTR) sequence with 39 available sequences.
