β¦ Synopsis
Stable dispersions of colloidal gold in (n)-hexane and cyclohexane have been prepared by transfer of colloidal gold particles from an aqueous phase to a (n)-hexane phase and to a cyclohexane phase, respectively. The phase transfer of gold particles occurred on addition of magnesium chloride to the emulsion of hexane in the aqueous suspension of gold with sodium oleate. The size distributions of the gold particles in the resulting colloidal gold in hexane suspensions were almost the same as that (mean diameter (14 \mathrm{~nm}), standard deviation (1.5 \mathrm{~nm}) ) of the original aqueous suspension of gold. The critical phase-transfer concentrations of various salts were determined. The phase-transfer powers of cations were larger than those of anions. Those of divalent and trivalent cations were exceedingly larger than that of the monovalent cation. 1993 Academic Press, Inc.
