Single crystals of a new reduced calcium niobium oxide, CaNb 2 O 4 , were prepared in an evacuated quartz tube at 11003C. The calcium niobium oxide crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbcm with a โ€ซุโ€ฌ 5.054(1), b โ€ซุโ€ฌ 11.904(1), and c โ€ซุโ€ฌ 5.839(1) A s , Z โ€ซุโ€ฌ 4, and the 5nal R factors are R โ€ซ

In the original work on lithium nitride halogenides (2, 3) the stoichiometry of the title compound was assigned as Li N Cl . My own experiments however show that this composition neither leads to a single-phase reaction product nor is it compatible with the unit cell volume determined for the title
