β¦ Synopsis
The reaction between tobramycin and I-fluoro-2,4dinitrobenzene was studied. This reaction shows a sharp pH optimum because, even under moderate alkaline conditions, derivatization of the aliphatic hydroxyl groups of tobramycin becomes an important side reaction. Phosphate and phthalate buffers also react with the derivatization reagent. Buffers comprising tertiary amines and hydrochloric acid are preferred.
