✦ Synopsis


Portfolio assessment can be used to measure counselor-in-training growth over time. The benefits to counselor education programs, including the ability to evaluate counselor progress, are discussed.

The use of portfolios to monitor student progress has been adopted by a number of states in recent years . Many professions have used portfolios to permit the professional to display his or her best work. For example, individuals in the visual and performing arts have showcased their accomplishments through this means (Killingsworth & Sanders, 1987). In higher education, the portfolio has a 20-year history and has been used mainly to train prospective teachers. Current interest in portfolio assessment relates to the need to monitor learning and achievement in areas not covered by standardized tests and traditional measures.
