The cationic polymerization of 1,Zbutylene oxide initiated by radical catalysts has been investigated in detail in the presence of maleic anhydride. The active species of this ionic polymerization was thought to be a conjugated radical of poly(maleic anhydride).

The solid state copolymerization ofmaleic anhydride and endomethylene-tetrahydrophthalic monopropyl ester was studied in the eutectic and other mixtures. It was concluded that the copolymerization of the monomers, neither of which polymerizes alone in the solid state, is made possible by the increas
