β¦ Synopsis
The picosecond fluorimetry technique is used to determine directly the short lifetimes of metatloporphyrin (rr. rr*) states. The Sr + Se and Sa + Se fluorescence of Cd and Lu tetrabenzoporphyrins is studied. For completeness, Zn tetrabenzoporphyrin fluorescence is dealt with using more traditional techniques. It is concluded that, contrary to the S r (x, n*) state deactivation, intersystcm crossing is unimportant in deactivation of the upper excited (x. n*) states of closedshell metalloporphyrins.
