โœฆ Synopsis

The rotational alignment As) of the NO(A) fragments in the photodissociation of the NO dimer at 193 nm has been determined based on the polarization response of the laser-induced fluorescence in the E %+-A 'Z+ transition. The observed alignment Ah*) is negative, with increasing magnitude in higher rotational levels, though it does not reach the limiting value of -0.4. The negative value shows that the rotational angular momentum of the fragment is mostly perpendicular to the electric transition dipole vector, implying that the cis planar (NO), dissociates while keeping its planarity. This tendency is stronger for fragments of high rotational quantum number.
