✦ Synopsis

Extremely small particles of Zn,P, and Ca,P, were prepared as colloids in aqueous solution and in the sohd state. The onset of absorption and the fluorescence band, which lie in the infrared for the macrocrystalline materials, can he shifted through the whole range of the vlstble by changing the parttcle sue. Fluoresc.ence quantum yields of 15% were obtained. The optical effects are due to the strong perturbations in the clectromc energy levels N a consequence of carrier confinement (Q-type materials) The solid parhcle~ wtuch fluoresce strongly, can be redk~lved wrthout changes in siz Methylnologen quenches the fluorescence and promotes the photoanodtc dissolution. An absorption band at long wavelengths in the visible and near-infrared is attributed to surface-trapped holes. A bleaching band close to the onset of absorption is attributed

Colloidal solutions of Cd0 and Inz03 were prepared by reaction of Cd2+ or In '+ ions with NaOH in alcoholic solution, thermal treatment of the hydroxide precipitates, and dissolution of the resulting powders in alcohol or water. Upon illumination of the solutions, the absorptions were blue-shifted w
