✦ Synopsis


Colloidal solutions of Cd0 and Inz03 were prepared by reaction of Cd2+ or In '+ ions with NaOH in alcoholic solution, thermal treatment of the hydroxide precipitates, and dissolution of the resulting powders in alcohol or water. Upon illumination of the solutions, the absorptions were blue-shifted within a wavelength range below the threshold. Exposure of the illuminated solutions to air resulted in a partial, and treatment with H202 in a full, recovery of the absorptions. This effect is explained by the generation of long-lived excess electrons on illumination. Silver ions were reduced on illuminated Cd0 and Inz09, while methyl viologen did not react. It is concluded that the photogenerated electrons in these semiconductor particles are at relatively low negative potentials.
