The significance of numerical data derived from Hueckel's classical zero-order M.O. treatment for the interpretation ofreactivities towards CC13 radicals is critically discussed. Attention is called to polar and steric effects as the main causes of discrepancies.
Among various carbcnyl compounds which will undergo photochemical reactions with simple olefins to give oxetanes, 9-anthraldehyde is especially interesting in its behavior. Although it has a low-lying rr,n+ triplet state, it reacts with simple olefins to form oxetanes in appreciable quantum yields.
