✦ Synopsis
A phosphorus-and cadmium-containing oligomer with ionic bonds was used as comonomer for modification of poly(ethylene terephthalate). With 0.4% P and 1.4% Cd, the modified material has the following characteristics: ~/r,I = 1.392; [COOH], 40.9 mg.eqv./g 10-6; m.p., 251°; diethylene glycol units, 2.23%; oligomers, 2.53%. The modifier acts as a cocatalyst in the transesterification and polycondensation processes. The modified polymer has significantly improved flame resistance.

## Abstract **Summary:** It is a big challenge to improve simultaneously both the flame retardancy and the melt‐dripping resistance of polymeric materials such as PET. In this paper, a novel intumescent flame retardant, DPSPB, was synthesized and blended with copolyester PET‐__co__‐DDP/O‐MMT nanoco
Phosphorus-containing polystyrene was obtained through incorporating phosphate groups onto poly(4-hydroxystyrene). This was achieved by esterification with diethylchlorophosphate. The phosphorylation was confirmed by IR, 'H-NMR, and 31P-NMR analysis. By varying the feeding ratios of the reactants, t
