β¦ Synopsis
Postsecondary teachers often are evaluated by colleagues, and peer judgments are an accepted part of evaluation in many professions. Yet, there have been few attempts to study and implement peer review for the evaluation of teachers at the public school level. There is considerable controversy over the limits and techniques of peer evaluation procedures for elementary and secondary teachers. However, most recent educational reform documents cite a need to study peer review as a means to improve teacher evaluation and to strengthen the standing of teaching as a profession. The purpose of this study was to investigate the decisions and reactions of teacher participants in a peer review program associated with a school district career ladder system.
