β¦ Synopsis
The ralc conskmts of quenching of singlet :mtl triplet states by oxygen hnve been measured for nine :~rom:~~ic h.vdroc:Irbons in solution. Singlcl quenching is diffusion controlled and similnr in nil cases but triplet quenching is slo~cr :md the quenching rrltc constant is closely r&ted to the reciprocal of the triplet cncrs-. This observntion is intcrprctcd in terms of the dominant role of Fmnck-Condon I:wtors in the q&chin:: mcch:lnism.

Measurements of the efficiency of rubrene-sensitized photooxidation of 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran imply that direct formation of singlet oxygen via oxygen quenching of excited rubrene singlets is inefficient. This contrasts with recent puhlications based upon studies of self-sensitized rubrene photoo
