In benzene and metbauol, the oxygen quenching of all-trans-retinal singlet results in intersystem crossing (enhanced) and energy transfer {to form 'O$ 'A,), both with quantum efficiencies eonsiderabIy less than unity (0.3-0.5). '02" formation from retinol triplet quenching by 302 is closer to quantitative ( E= 0.8).
