✦ Synopsis

The ionization of oxygen in alkaline solutions on a nickel substrate is examined, with special reference to the state of the nickel surface. If nickel is maintained at above cc -0.15 V es hydrogen in the same solution, oxygen begins to be adsorbed: above +0-l V a phase oxide such as Ni(OH)$ is probably formed. The ionization of oxygen slows down (at any one potential) with increasing oxidation of the electrode.

The absorption rate of oxygen in alkaline sodium dithionite solutions, in a stirred tank with a flat interfacial surface, has been studied experimentally. Under the conditions studied (12.0 < pH Q 13.7, 2045"C, partial oxygen pressure 0.20 at 1 atm and a dithionite concentration of O.OOWIk20 M), abs
