The simple anthracycline analogues 3a-e were synthesized as potential anticancer agents. Anodic oxidation of the phenol derivative 4, phthalide anion annelation ofp-quinone monoacetals 5 and selective attachment of the side chain were the three key steps towards these target compounds.
The (Ξ΄-hydroxyalkenyl)(pyrrolidino)carbene complexes, prepared by means of aldol additions of the (propenyl)(pyrrolidino)carbene complex to p-nitrobenzaldehyde and 4-pyridinecarbaldehyde, have been treated with methyl N-(triethylammoniosulfonyl)carbamate inner salt (Burgess reagent) to afford the co
