The complex orthogonal group O n acts on the n × n matrices, M n , by restricting the adjoint action of GL n . This action provides us with an action on the ring of complex valued polynomial functions on the n × n matrices, M n . The polynomials of degree d, denoted d M n , form a finite dimensiona

✦ Synopsis
We study the structure of hypersurface orbital varieties of sl N, ރ those that . are hypersurfaces in the nilradical of some parabolic subalgebra and how information about this structure is encoded in the standard Young tableau associated to it by the Robinson᎐Schensted algorithm. We present a conjecture for the exact form of the unique non-linear defining equations of hypersurface orbital varieties and proofs of the conjecture in certain cases.

Let r 3 be an integer. A weak (r, 2)-system is a family of r sets such that all pairwise intersections among the members have the same cardinality. We show that for n large enough, there exists a family F of subsets of [n] such that F does not contain a weak (r, 2)-system and |F| 2 (1Â3) } n 1Â5 log

Let f (x, y) be a polynomial with rational coefficients, and let E be a number field. We prove estimates for the number of positive integers n T such that some root : of f (n, y)=0 satisfies E/Q(:). The estimates are uniform with respect to E and, provided E satisfies natural necessary conditions, t
