β¦ Synopsis
N,O, reacts with 02-ion in LiCl-KC1 eutectic at 450" to give NO,-. By analogy to the salts of the other oxides of Group V, NO,-can be considered as metanitrate and is expected to giveunder appropriate conditions-the corresponding pyro-salt. Experiments are described in which the 02-ion in LiCl-KC1 melt is potentiometrically titrated with KNO,. The titration curves show an inflexion at the composition corresponding to pyronitrate, N,O,*-.
The formation of pyronitrate in KNO, melts is also established. Strong oxide-ion donors, eg Na,Oe or NaOH, or electrolytically generated Oa-ion, react slowly with the melt to produce a comuound of less basic character. The reaction is zero-order with resnect to 02-and has an activation inergy of cu 6.17 Kcal/mole. I Pyronitrate in molten KNOs possesses a basicity comparable to that of the carbonate ion in the same melt. It readily lends its oxide ion to strong acids eg, Cr20,2-and PO,-.
X-ray diffraction patterns of N0,--N,0,4-mixtures show peaks that can be correlated to the new anion.

We show that in contrast to MSA the HNC approximation can account qualitatively for the long wavelength scattering of metal-molten salt solutions. The difference is attributed to the defects of the MSA in the description of the short-range as well as the long-range order in the liquid.
