## Abstract The mechanism of water loss from the 1βbeptanol molecular ion was studied by using a set of deuterium 1βheptanols labelled at each position of the chain. The carbonβbound hydrogen atom lost in the water comes mainly from C(4) (69%) but also from C(2) and C(3) (10 and 13%, respectively),
## Abstract The chemical ionization spectra of a series of deuterated heptanals has been studied using methane and isobutane. Loss of water from the [MH]^+^ ion follows the same pattern as in electron ionization; hydrogen (deuterium) is lost from all positions except Cβ1 and Cβ2. The reagent proton
