Hoebe and colleagues describe a method to reduce phototoxicity and photodamage to sensitive fluorescence samples. By spatially controlling the time of light exposure, the light-dose required to generate an image of good quality is significantly reduced, as evidenced in reduced photobleaching and increased cell survival during in-vivo measurements. Azurite, an Improved Blue Fluorescent Protein

Selecting improved variants from a structurally targeted library of mutations, M. Mena and his colleagues were able to find a blue fluorescent protein with significantly improved characteristics. The brighter and more photostable fluorescent protein Azurite is an addition to the available range of fluorescent proteins in a spectral region where no suitable proteins for fluorescence imaging were available before.
